It was a cold evening at the WWK Arena, and Borussia Dortmund arrived looking to put pressure on the top sides again after a tricky run of form. Augsburg, on the other hand, set up in a 5-4-1 system, clearly focused on staying compact and hitting on the break. The game started with Dortmund holding most of the possession while Augsburg sat deep and waited for mistakes.
Dortmund started the match on the front foot, keeping the ball moving across the pitch and pushing Augsburg back into their own half.
The visitors were patient with their build-up, trying to stretch the game. Despite the control, clear chances were rare in the opening minutes.
Augsburg’s plan was obvious, defend in numbers, frustrate Dortmund, and use quick breaks when the chance came. Their back five stayed tight, cutting off spaces between the lines.
The deadlock finally broke in the 37th minute. After a scramble in the box, Serhou Guirassy reacted first, controlling the loose ball and placing it calmly past Finn Dahmen. It was a poacher’s finish, the kind of moment Dortmund had been waiting for after long periods of possession.
Augsburg tried to respond through Elvis Rexhbecaj, who carried the ball forward and tested the defence with a few half chances, but Dortmund’s backline stayed firm.
The half ended with Dortmund leading 1–0, a deserved advantage.
After the break, Augsburg came out with a bit more intent. They started pressing higher. For a short period, Dortmund’s rhythm slowed as Augsburg forced them into small mistakes.
Still, Dortmund managed the game smartly.
Augsburg’s best spell came around the 60th minute when Elvis Rexhbecaj took on a shot from distance that went just over. They also had a few moments from set pieces, but Dortmund’s defenders were dominant in the air.
In the final minutes, Dortmund played with experience, slowing the tempo, winning fouls, and keeping possession to see out the result. When the referee blew the final whistle, Dortmund held on for a 1–0 win, a performance built on control, patience, and solid defending.

Finn Dahmen – 6.2
Dahmen didn’t make a single save and had little to do besides picking the ball out of his net. He conceded once and lost possession 20 times while trying to build from the back. His 46 distributions showed effort to play out, but Dortmund’s press made it difficult.

Dimitris Giannoulis – 7.0
Had a busy night dealing with Dortmund’s wide play. Made 3 tackles, 2 clearances, and 2 interceptions. Won 9 duels and drew 1 foul, though his 68% pass rate and 19 lost possessions showed how much he was tested.
Fabian Rieder – 6.5
Tried to push the team forward with 2 successful dribbles, 1 key pass, and 1 shot. But 67% pass accuracy and 20 lost possessions summed up a tough game in midfield against Dortmund’s press.
Elvis Rexhbecaj – 7.0
Augsburg’s most active midfielder. Made 34 passes (79% accuracy), 1 key pass, and created 1 chance. Attempted 3 shots with one going off target. His 8 passes in the final third showed how he tried to spark attacks.
Han-Noah Massengo – 6.4
Kept things simple with 24 accurate passes (80%) and 4 in the final third. Didn’t contribute much in attack but worked hard off the ball to keep shape and protect the back line.
Alexis Claude-Maurice – 6.0
Struggled to influence the game. Completed 23 passes at 79% but lost possession 17 times. Tried to link midfield and attack but found it hard against Dortmund’s midfield control.
Mert Kömür – 6.4
Had little service as the lone striker. Played 63 minutes, had 1 shot off target, and drew 1 foul. Lost the ball 7 times but worked hard in pressing and movement.
